Splash’s goal is to provide clean water solutions and hygiene education to each and every elementary school in the city, which would cover 300,000 children. Soapbox is providing soap bars to help them meet this goal. It’s no secret that the number of people moving from the countryside to urban centers is growing at a faster rate than ever before, and Addis Ababa is no exception. UN projections estimate Addis Ababa’s population to grow from 2010 13.9 million to 28.4 million in 2030. The challenges regarding sanitation and water infrastructure with this kind of growth are immense and most severely affect the urban poor living in slums with little infrastructure, a population that is estimated to encompass 80% of the population in the city.

SoapBox chose to partner with Splash because of their focus on providing clean water by use of succinct programs that independently run after Splash exits the community, leaving behind clean water and hygiene education. Splash cleans water for kids. Using commercially proven technology – the same used by leading global food chains and hotels – Splash secures world-class water filtration for kids who would otherwise rely on unclean water in their schools, orphanages, or other institutions. Beyond this, Splash both creates and delivers hygiene education programs, and also partners with local experts in sanitation, thereby advancing the full complement of WASH (“Water, Sanitation & Hygiene”) interventions required to fight water-borne illness.
Because Ethiopia is Splash’s first venture on the African continent, they have been working in collaboration with the Addis Ababa Education Bureau to ensure that everyone will be pushing toward the same end goal.
